Equality & Diversity

A major piece of research has just been completed into current equalities policy and practice in Moray. The research was commissioned by The Moray Council, Moray Voluntary Service Organisation, Moray College, Careers Scotland and other Community Planning partners. The two-year project was funded through the European Social fund Objective 3 and match-funded by The Moray Council. A full-time research worker was recruited for the duration of the project.

The research was conducted in three inter-linking phases:

An employers' survey of around 250 organisations from the public, voluntary and private sector with responses from a total of 70 organisations.
In-depth interviews with employers and focus groups/surveys with employees to explore issues identified in the survey.
Consultations with women, disabled people and minority ethnic groups to identify their experiences of accessing employment and services.

The overall outcome of the research was confirmation that there is a lack of awareness of equality issues throughout the public, private and voluntary sectors. While there are examples of good practice, particularly from services dedicated to supporting particular groups, many organisations are not addressing inequality of access to services in an effective way. A full report on the findings - Equality in Moray - can be viewed below. A day-long seminar was held at the Findhorn Foundation in late November to debate the findings of the report.
