What's New?

Roads & Transportation Group
The Elgin South sub group met on 2nd July to consider traffic orders received from Transportation Manager, Gordon Holland.  The proposed road traffic orders considered waiting restrictions on various roads in Elgin.  There was a quick response time required so it was not possible to consult with all members.  If you would like to be part of this focus group in the future, then please let Rebecca know.  The focus group responded as per letter in correspondence.

Active Travel Focus Group
A sub group met with Chris Thompson, Active Travel coordinator on 26th June to consider the Safer Choices, Safer Places bid for Moray.  The sub group offered several points for future consideration for stage 2 of the bid.  These included the need for training packages for adults, as they may need to refresh their cycling skills/highway code having additional responsibility for their children cycling along side them and also the need for better links with core paths and recreational areas etc.  The forms have since put together a report offering community support for the funding to be awarded to Moray under the community engagement section of the bid.  This report is available in correspondence.

Linkwood Residents Action Group
Linkwood Residents Action Group met on 9th July and have launched a "See it, Report it" campaign for their area in partnership with the Community Warden, Crime Stoppers and Grampian Police.  Flyers have been distributed to all homes in Linkwood.  This is to ensure that any antisocial behaviour or crime is reported to the correct agencies and if additional resources are needed, then will be redirected to meet the needs of the community.  The main thrust of the group now is to build a stronger community at Linkwood.  They are considering organising a gala day to include all families on the estate, but realise this is a big undertaking and it may be necessary to start planning now for an event next year.

Doocot Park Action Group
Young people are now awaiting the building of the community shelter on the Doocot Park.  The new bins and benches/picnic table is in storage waiting for the shelter to be completed.

Elgin High Litter Group
Members have been attending meetings at Elgin High School to help identify solutions to any anti social litter problem in the area.  Resources in the area have been altered in response to the needs identified by the community group.  They have also written to Asda and asked if they would sponsor a bin for Edgar Road.  Asda are keen to hear more.  This is currently being priced.  The meeting on 26th June was cancelled.

Young Dookiteer Group
Investigations identified interest from over 50 children under the age of 12 within the New Elgin Primary School catchment area and 17 parents have volunteered to help.  Parents have commenced training and disclosure checks.  The group is currently in the process of being affiliated to Youth Scotland, developing policies, registering with MVSO and opening a bank acco9unt.  Their priority at the moment is to raise enough funds to purchase equipment before the start of term.  They have already raised £700.  The new group will be called "The Young Dookiteer Youth Club".  It is proposed that it will run from New Elgin Primary School, one evening per week from 6pm - 7.30pm and will have a 70p subscription to cover costs but remain a non-profit making group.

Elgin South Strategy Group
Elgin South Area Forum is developing a sub group of the forum as a Strategy Group.  This group are looking at a draft action plan and will consider priorities under the new community planning themes and the single outcome agreements.  This group will progress with the completion of hte consultation period for Area Committees.

Glen Moray Drive/Springfield Shopping Area Action Group
Forum members met with Bilbohall Estates Forum and Elected members to discuss the way forward and to formulate an action plan to try and bring this area back to being a desirable place to live, work and shop.  They have written to the retailers expressing their concerns relating to health and safety and are asking for a coordinated approach to find a long-term solution.

Community Allotments
The Elgin Allotment Projects Steering Group have been successful in securing a grant from the Moray Food and Health Group for the sum of £500.00.  This will go towards the investigation costs of setting up community allotments.  Both the Estates Department and the Planning Department at The Moray Council have been very helpful in giving advice.  There is also interest in other areas of Moray in setting up community allotments and Rebecca Kail, Elgin South Area Forum is following up these interests to avoid duplication and to share information and knowledge.

Pilot Newsletter
The Neighbourhood News editorial group has not met, as there is no secure administration budget to fund future editions.  Elgin North Area Forum has reserved £300.00 towards the next edition.

Elgin Entranceway Beautification Scheme
The group taking forward this scheme is still finding it challenging to find someone to take on the coordination role.  Also some of the sites highlighted for possible flowerbeds may be part of the proposed Elgin bypass.  A meeting will be arranged soon once a coordinator is identified.

The Youth Forum brings together young people aged 12-25 to discuss common concerns and ways of improving the quality of life in their area.

What's New?

Doocot Park Action Group
Young people are still working on the final stages of developing the community shelter on the Doocot Park.  The new bins and benches/picnic table is in storage waiting for the shelter to be built.  The group did a presentation tot he Elgin Community Council in March, which was well received.  The group has organised a fundraiser disco/karaoke for 25th May in New Elgin Hall.  Volunteers are needed to sell tickets and raffles, please contact Amy or Ann on 01343 559309 if you would like to help.  It is anticipated that a "Friends of the Dooky Park Group" is established for the long-term sustainability of the park.
